Services We Provide
Food Hampers
This will be at the heart of what the Muslim Kitchen provides us a service. Simply explained, we will collect food from our supporters and distribute it those who are needy. Each food parcel will have a minimum three-day supply of essential items which will ensure that the immediate needs of the individual or family are met.
The individuals and families in need will be identified through our partnership with statutory agencies, community organisations and a simple referral system.
Weekly Community Kitchen
Many of us take a hot meal and the social company to eat it alongside, for granted. Sadly, for some individuals and families this can be a real struggle. By using the donations, we receive and the input of our volunteers, we will prepare a hot nutritious meal which will be served from a different community venue each week.
This will run on a 6-8 week rotational basis, so no one organisation has the pressure of hosting it every week.
School Breakfast Clubs Support
Official data shows that 1 in 4 children in this country live in poverty.
Through talking to teachers, we are aware that children are turning up to school each morning hungry and this impacts on educational performance.
The breakfast club support will see us supporting selected schools in the poorest areas with donations of stock items such as cereals and bread.
Services We Plan to Provide
A Mobile Catering Van (mobile delivery of food parcels)
We know that sometimes transport can be a barrier for people experiencing hardship, and even where foodbanks operate, people are simply unable to access them.
Our aspiration is to be able to purchase and equip a catering van so we can take food directly to the people who need it most throughout the area. The mobile service will allow us to expand the capacity of the Muslim Kitchen network to distribute food by removing barriers that prevent access to centre-based foodbanks and allows for a more flexible delivery of food products.
Most individuals facing food poverty must also tackle a multitude of other issues so moving forward, we aim to provide a more holistic service where other items such as clothing can also be provided.
This service will be developed gradually and once we have our core services up and running.
Additional items when required (sleeping bags, clothing etc)
Reducing Food Wastage at Weddings & Events
It’s an irony that at a time when so much food poverty exists in the country, we often see so much food wastage at weddings, large parties and other events. Tackling this is not easy, as food safety regulations mean that any redistribution of food must adhere to strict health and safety guidelines.
However, we aim to work with restaurants and caterers to arrive at a solution which can put this excess food to good use.
